At just 19 years old, Amanda Luthuli from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, embodies determination and resilience. Raised in a family deeply rooted in cultural and religious values, she carries with her the wisdom of her mother’s words: “Yonk’ into oyenzayo uzenzela wena”—“Whatever you do, do it for yourself.” This guiding mantra has shaped Amanda’s outlook on life, fostering a sense of responsibility and a commitment to forging her own path.
Amanda’s aspirations led her to Rhodes University, where she is pursuing a degree in pharmacy—a calling she feels deeply connected to. “For me, healthcare isn’t just a career. It’s an opportunity to make a difference, to enhance lives and improve well-being,” she says. Drawn by the university’s renowned pharmacy programme and its rich 120-year legacy, Amanda has embraced the academic journey with gratitude and determination.
However, her path has not been without challenges. Amanda’s parents had shouldered the full financial burden of her tuition and accommodation, a significant strain alongside supporting her siblings and managing household expenses. The Hillensberg Trust Bursary, which she received in 2024, has been life-changing. “The bursary has lifted such a weight off my family’s shoulders. It’s not just financial support; it’s emotional relief that allows me to focus entirely on my studies,” Amanda shares.
The bursary has given Amanda the chance to dream bigger. With financial stability, she envisions a future free of debt, where she can excel academically, take on leadership roles in healthcare, and even pursue advanced studies. For Amanda, the impact of this support extends far beyond her current circumstances—it is a stepping stone to long-term success.
Amanda is also passionate about the potential of young people to drive change. She draws inspiration from her peers’ use of technology and social media to promote awareness and inspire action. “Youth today have incredible power to create meaningful change. Platforms like social media can be used to educate, spread positivity, and inspire future generations,” she reflects.
To students who may doubt their potential, Amanda offers heartfelt advice: “You are capable. Believe in yourself, set achievable goals, and don’t compare your progress to others. As the saying goes, ‘Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.’”
