NSFAS FAQ

Q: What costs does NSFAS fund?
A: NSFAS funds Tuition, Accommodation and Learning materials.

Q: What does NSFAS not fund?
A: NSFAS does not cover societies, clubs, replacement student cards, handouts, VAC
accommodation, supplementary exam fees, printing charges or any other extra’s.

Q: What is the NSFAS Accommodation Cap?
A: NSFAS and the DHET has introduced a Cap (Maximum Amount) that NSFAS will pay
for accommodation fees, in 2023 this amount was R45,000.00 (this excludes food costs).

Q: What does the R45,000.00 cover?
A: For On-Campus residence students; the amount covers the room portion of the
accommodation, including Water, Electricity, Laundry, House-keeping and incidental
allowance.
A: For off-campus students; the amount covers the rental portion. This amount is paid by the
University to the student.

Q: What does NSFAS cover for food?
A: For on-campus residence students: The amount covers food to a maximum amount of
R16,500.00, this includes the incidental costs.
A: For off-campus students: The amount covers food to a maximum amount of R16,500.00,
this includes the incidental costs. This amount is paid by Coinvest, who was appointed by
NSFAS, to the student.

Q: What does NSFAS pay to the University, and what does Coinvest pay to the
student?
A: For on-campus residence students: NSFAS pays the tuition and residence fees directly to
the University.
A: For off-campus students: NSFAS pays the Tuition and the accommodation directly to the
University. Coinvest pays the food and incidental allowance portion directly to the student
via the NSFAS bank account. Once confirmation has been received from Coinvest that the
food portion was paid, the University disburses the accommodation portion to the student
bank account.

Q: What do I do as a NSFAS funded student if I have a balance owing?
A: NSFAS students are required to complete and submit an Acknowledgement of Debt
(AOD) and a Payment Plan for the outstanding debt. These documents will allow the release
of results and registration clearance, on condition that the student is funded in the 2024
academic year.

Q: What do I do if I am not funded by NSFAS in 2024?
A: Students that lost NSFAS funding and is not funded in the 2024 academic year, should
make arrangements with the University’s Student Fees Office. These arrangements include
payment of arrear fees, payment of Initial Fees, and further arrangements to settle debt over
a specified period.

Q: What is the due date for AOD’s, Payment Plans and Fee Arrangements?
A: The due dates coincide with Initial fee due dates e.g. 19 January 2024 for Returning
Students and 26 January 2024 for New First Time Entering Students. However,
arrangements can still be made after these dates.

Q: What do I do if I have a balance owing from Undergraduate studies and I want to
register for Post Graduate studies in 2024:
A: You need to arrange with the Student Fees Office. These arrangements include payment
of arrear fees, payment of Initial fees, and further arrangements to settle debt over a
specified period.

Q: When will the University be paying for off-campus accommodation rental?
A: The University has not received the 2024 NSFAS/DHET Guidelines and therefore has no
indication when allowances will be paid. Note: Off-campus students will need to email
finaid@ru.ac.za with a fully signed lease agreement for an accredited off-campus
accommodation (digs).
