Introduction

The Provincial Book Fair Pop-Up Event, organized in collaboration with Lumkile’s Book Joint, was hosted at Rhodes University Library from September 9th to 10th, 2024. This literary and cultural event aimed to celebrate literature and foster a culture of reading among students and the broader university community, leading up to the provincial book fair on October 5th.

Event Details

The pop-up event took place in the Library Quad from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day. Due to inclement weather, we relocated to the Library Veranda on the ground floor. The event targeted students, staff, and aspiring young authors from the Rhodes community and was coordinated in partnership with the Eastern Cape Bookfair Organizers, who managed logistics and overall planning.

The library played a vital role in promoting the event through its marketing channels and social media. We provided logistical support, including setup assistance and staff management, to ensure a smooth experience.

The event showcased a diverse collection of books featuring local and regional publications. Highlights included interactive sessions and a student draw that offered attendees the chance to win books from the displayed collection. This engaging element generated excitement and boosted participation.

The pop-up attracted a significant turnout, bringing together students and staff from various faculties to celebrate literature. By creating a welcoming atmosphere, the event fostered community engagement and underscored the universal appeal of reading.
