SingaRocka: Geology Student Peer Mentoring Programme

SingaRocka crest

SingaRocka is a geology student peer mentoring programme developed among higher institute geology departments to facilitate an exchange of professional and academic knowledge, expertise, insights, skills and experiences through dialogue and collaborative learning. The programme is organised by Bukho Charles and Siyasanga Dyan in collaboration with the Rhodes University Geology Department. It will be made possible by all the undergraduate and graduate students in the department who participate in the programme and volunteer their time and expertise to create a more supportive and inclusive environment in the department.

As a student, it helps to have the support and encouragement of a near-peer with similar experiences. The programme seeks to provide point-of-contact mentors for geology students during their undergraduate years, a mentoring directory for all graduate students in the department and connect them with local (and international) industry and academia personnel. Additionally, the programme provides mentors and mentees with structured relationship-building tools to develop and accomplish focused academic career goals and promote academic excellence.

We seek to recruit geology students to participate and serve as near-peer mentors and mentees. Students interested in the programme will be able to request a 30-minute meeting with a peer mentor to discuss different topics related to geology. We intend for the peer mentors to serve as inspirational role models for students and provide academic and social peer support to those who contact them. Moreover, the main goal of this programme is to create additional opportunities for geology students to connect and establish positive relationships.

Who can participate?

All 1st year undergraduate students are welcome to register as mentees, and all advanced undergraduate (2nd and 3rd years) and graduate students are also welcome to register as mentees and also serve as peer mentors. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a part of the programme, please contact Bukho Charles or Siyasanga Dyan at singarockagspmp@gmail.com
