Energy Sustainability

Rhodes University is making determined efforts to reduce consumption of electricity  bearing in mind energy sustainability concerns and the spiralling costs of electricity. The Division of Infrastructure and Operations appeals to staff and students to limit electricity usage. Please also note the request from the RU Electrical Manager:

...with energy conservation in mind I respectfully request that heating appliances such as heaters, urns etc only be used when absolutely necessary. If there are two bars on a heater only use one. Use hot water from systems sparingly. Turn lights off when leaving an area which will be become vacant. By any means please try to control energy usage in your area.

Rhodes University Facilities Department is responsible for Power Monitoring - energy consumption on campus. The University has begun to address energy efficiency issues in various ways on campus. Old buildings have been retrofitted with low-energy consuming electrical fittings and appliances where possible, and all new buildings should automatically include these features.

RU is supportive of the proposed Makana Wind Farm and is exploring other sustainable energy options to reduce dependence on 'dirty energy' sources.
