Confucius Institute Staff Exploring Plettenberg Bay and Knysna

On 6 September 2024, the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University staff had the pleasure of joining the French Studies 3 students on their annual excursion to Plettenberg Bay and Knysna, a delightful experience from start to finish. The excitement among the Chinese staff was noticeable as they eagerly prepared for the journey, ready to immerse themselves in the adventure.

The trip commenced with a scenic four-hour drive from Makhanda to Plettenberg Bay, a stunning seaside town along South Africa’s Garden Route. This initial drive was not just a transition but an integral part of the experience, enhancing the anticipation and excitement for the adventures that awaited in this captivating destination. The drive itself was a memorable part of the overall journey. Ms. Deng Yipping, a Chinese Studies 3 teacher, highlighted her admiration for the breath-taking landscape along the way, noting, “The mountains and water are very beautiful.” The first stop at Tsitsikama Bridge presented an exhilarating display as brave bungee jumpers leaped from the bridge, captivating everyone with the intense thrill of the experience.

Upon arrival in Plettenberg Bay, the group eagerly explored the beach, numerous restaurants, and other tourist attractions. The vibrant local scene offered a range of experiences, from relaxing by the shore to sampling diverse cuisines. Each site provided its own charm, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in the area’s offerings. The combination of picturesque views, delectable food, and engaging activities ensured that the exploration was both enjoyable and memorable. This part of the trip was a highlight, showcasing Plettenberg Bay’s appeal and leaving a lasting impression on all the visitors.

The adventure continued with a visit to Knysna, where the lively Knysna Mall was explored, and the stunning Knysna Heads were admired. The striking headlands around the estuary made the journey feel more impressive. For Ms. Chen  Xinlei, Chinese Studies 1 teacher,  Knysna was her favourite destination. She remarked that the rich colours of the sea and nature created a serene atmosphere, saying, “It was a place where you could sit down and watch for the entire afternoon.”

The trip was a wonderful blend of excitement, exploration, and cultural discovery; witnessing the students’ joy and engagement was a rewarding experience. Ms. Sethu Ralo, the administrator of the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University, shared that she thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the sites she visited. “The view was so unique and beautiful,” she said. This excursion not only broadened horizons but also strengthened bonds among everyone involved. The opportunity to share in this memorable adventure with the French 3 students was greatly appreciated.
