High School Tutoring and Mentoring

The High School Tutoring and Mentoring programme is a collaboration between RUCE and five community-based organisations:  GADRA Education; Khanya Maths and Science; Ikamva Youth; Inkululeko and Sophumelela.

High School Tutoring and Mentoring (HSTM) seeeks to grow social responsibility in Rhodes University students to holistically contribute to their learning experience. The programme is a pathway for students from engaging with communities, to conducing engaged research at a postgraduate level.

The rationale behind the programme is that volunteerism and volunteer activities can no longer be seen solely as extra-curricular. Volunteerism provides students with skills that are necessary to produce well-rounded graduates that are locally responsive and globally engaged citizens. Volunteering provides students with the soft skills that they need to be prepared for their work and social environments. Student skills are matched with learning opportunities in the community partner sites and community partners are key sources of knowledge to students.

Suitable training and orientation is necessary so that volunteers can contribute productively to their placements. The development of community partners is also key because this ensures that partners can make effective use of the volunteers.

This creates a mutually beneficial and reciprocal relationship between the partner site and the volunteers. In this way, the programme also contributes to strengthening the community partner organisations.

How does HSTM work?

Volunteers are trained in community engagement, tutoring and mentoring and are awarded a certificate of competence upon successful completion of the course. This training takes place before volunteering starts, in March.

Volunteers are given access to a RUConnected Resource site for additional support throughout their volunteeering.

Volunteers work with learners from Grades 8 to 12, either individually or in small groups (depending on number of learners). The volunteers engage in structured support around subject and or homework related content.

Volunteers are required to meet with learners at least once per week for 1 hour.

How do I join?

Volunteering is open to all students, from first year to postgraduate studies, including international students. Staff are also encouraged to join.

Your placement is dependent on your choice, volunteering opportunities available, and of course, your timetable.
