Annual Community Engagement Awards
Celebrating Active Citizenship in the Rhodes University Community
Each year, Rhodes University Community Engagement hosts the Annual Community Engagement Awards - a celebration of the passion, commitment, and impact demonstrated by students and community partners in our Engaged Citizenry programmes and in Engaged Research projects. This year, the CE Awards will take place on Wednesday 1 October.
The Awards aim to recognise individuals and groups who embody the spirit of active citizenship and collaborative community development. Students in Engaged Citenzry programmes, Undergraduate and Postgraduate students doing Engaged Research, Halls or Residences, Sports Clubs or Societies and Community Partner Organisations who embody the values of community engagement are eligible for awards based on their involvement in CE activities throughout the year.
CE participants and partners are encouraged to consider the criteria at the start of the year, and to nominate themselves or deserving peers and collaborators for an award.
There are five award categories, each with its own specific criteria which can be found on the Nomination Forms (below). Nominations are open to students and community partners, who may nominate themselves or others. The nomination period typically opens in September, and updates will be shared on this page and via our social media platforms.

The Annual Community Engagement Awards recognise a year of excellence in Makhanda. It provides an opportunity for us all to acknowledge and share and reaffirm our the pride we take in brightening the corners where we are. The Awards are an important part of reaffirming the student leaders and volunteer managers of our programmes, all of whom go above and beyond their calls of duty throughout the year to ensure the best possible experience for everyone involved in the project.
The Finalists for Awards in five categories, as well as University management are invited to a small ceremony held towards the end of each year. The event brings together volunteers and student leaders from across our citizenship programmes, as well as early engaged researchers and the community partners who make it all possible.
