SECOND YEAR COURSES IN MICROBIOLOGY

 

Course description MIC 201

Introduction to the major cellular and acellular groups of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, archaea, and protists. An emphasis is placed on the structure, function, physiology, nutrition, and life cycles of the different groups of microbes. The effects of microbes on the natural and built environment and on plant, animal and human health will also be examined. The course includes practical experience in the isolation and culture of microbes and a field trip.

 

Course description MIC 202

Introduction to the molecular biology of prokaryotes, microbial genetics, prokaryote gene regulation, and recombinant DNA technology. The course will include a practical introduction to basic molecular techniques such as DNA isolation and characterization, bacterial transformation, gene regulation, and recombinant DNA technology.

THIRD YEAR COURSES IN MICROBIOLOGY

 

Course Description

There are two independent third-year courses in Microbiology. MIC 301 is held in the first semester and MIC 302 in the second semester. Credit may be obtained in each course separately, and, in addition, an aggregate mark of at least 50% will be deemed to be equivalent to a two-credit course MIC 3, provided that a candidate obtains the required subminimum in each semester. These courses each comprise several modules and weekly practicals. Students are may also be required to undertake a mini research project.

 

MIC 301:

Eukaryotic cell biology and concepts in immunology, host-pathogen interactions and stem cell biology. The practical component of this course focuses on recombinant DNA techniques and genetic manipulation of bacteria.

 

MIC 302:

Exploiting microorganisms for industrial and commercial purposes. Topics covered include industrial microbiology, microbial ecology, antimicrobial drug discovery and development, and agricultural microbiology. The course includes practical experience in fermentation techniques, bioreactor design and the characterisation of bacteria. A field trip to local industries is included.
